These plants can be strategically planted around your yard, garden and patio to keep those unwanted critters away.

Here are some of the most common plants/herbs to keep insects at bay.

However, insects hate the smell, and it is has been shown to be effective in keeping away mosquitoes, flies, moths and fleas. Plant lavender near the entryway of your home and around the garden and patio. The oil from the flowers can be rubbed on the skin to be used as a bug repellant when headed outdoors.
  • Chrysanthemums – These colorful flowers contain the chemical pyrethrum, which is used in natural insect repellants and dog shampoo. It not only can repel, but also kill ticks, fleas, roaches, ants, spider mites and bed begs. Chrysanthemums also make a nice addition to yards and patios with their bright colors.
  • Basil – Basil is not just a nice herb to add to recipes; planting it around your garden can repel mosquitoes and flies. Moreover, a handful of basil leaves and stems can be used to make a natural repellent by adding alcohol to a basil-water mixture. Basil can be easily planted by entryways and outdoor entertainment areas.
  • Marigolds – Marigolds are the most effective in keeping away mosquitoes and aphids. They can also keep rabbits from raiding your garden, and farmers like them because their roots keep nematodes away. Marigolds work to repel unwanted critters when planted along the border of flower beds and interspersed throughout your vegetable garden.
  • Mint – Mint repels mosquitoes, but it is best to grow the plants in pots and place them around the patio or yard. This is because mint spreads aggressively and can easily overtake a small garden. When combined with witch hazel and apple cider vinegar, mint oil makes a natural repellent.
