If driving in the snow is not one of your strong suits or otherwise terrifies you, let’s take a look at a few winter weather driving tips. You can file your newfound driving prowess under your increasingly-long list of survival skills!
Driving on Icy Roads
You know how most people hit the brakes when they start to slide on a patch of ice? Don’t do that. Leave your brakes the heck alone and steer your way out following the direction you want your tires to go. For example, if your back wheels are sliding left, drive left. If you must brake, do so as gently as you can, and drive at a decreased speed to avoid having to stand on them. Use low gears whenever possible, as this increases traction, particularly when driving on hills.
Baking out of any icy driveway? Add traction in the form of sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt.
Driving in Snow
It’s recommended that you slow down immediately when driving and it begins to snow, especially if its falling hard. As with driving on ice, steer your way out of any slides rather than hitting the brakes. If driving in a truck through assorted mountains, it’s an excellent idea to put chains on your tires. Depending on where you live, this may be necessary as per state law. In addition to utilizing snow chains, you’ll want to have tires with plenty of traction. The recommended test is to place a quarter between two tire groves–if more than half of the quarter is showing, your tires are worn down and need to be replaced. For best results, purchase new tires at the beginning of each cold season, particularly if you live in an area hit with snow on a regular basis.
