DIY Soap

homemade lotionThe ability to make your own soap is another strength to add to your growing list of survival skills. As fun as soap projects can be, it’s important to remember that soapmaking isn’t for children! It can actually be quite dangerous, as you’re working with lye a lot of the time. If your chosen recipe calls for lye, wear goggles, protective clothing, and rubber gloves. And for God’s sake, don’t inhale the stuff! Let’s check out two lye-free recipes to get you started, one of which is for laundry detergent:

Basic Soap Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups grated white unscented natural soap
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (or crushed almonds)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons almond oil
  • 5ml – 15ml essential oils (depending on scent strength)

Directions

Grate the soap into a heat-resistant glass bowl and add a 1/4 cup of water. Don’t stir the mixture, as this will result in air bubbles. Create a double boiler by placing the bowl in a pot of simmering water and allow the mixture to melt. Once melted, remove it from the heat and add the other ingredients carefully to again avoid air bubbles. Pour the mixture in your chosen mold, whether an actual soap mold, old ice cream box, or other option. Tap the mold gently to remove any–you guessed it–air bubbles, and place it in your refrigerator to set. Once set, remove it from the mold and allow it to cure on a rack for about three weeks. Wrap or use it as desired!

 Laundry Detergent

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Washing Soda
  • 1/2 cup Dawn Dishwashing Detergent

Directions

Add the Borax and the washing soda to a clean, gallon-size container using a funnel. Be sure the container has a tight-fitting cap. Fill 3/4 of the container with hot water, then replace the cap. Shake well. Add the dishwashing liquid, then fill the container to the top with cold water. Replace the cap and shake the mixture once more. That’s it–you now have your own laundry detergent!
