It seems with each passing day there is some new disease or threat that has the ability to wipe out all of mankind. The first case of MERS appeared in the U.S. on May 2 via a traveler from Saudi Arabia. The Centers for Disease Control says there is no threat of an outbreak, but the virus has already killed 139 people since 2012, according to Al-Jazeera.
It takes time–something we may not have much of–to build an underground bunker from scratch. Thankfully there are options for pre-built refuges for both shoestring and deep-pocket budgets.
Hardened Structures
When the police state reaches its full potential, government agents will likely try and snuff everyone out of their homes with tear gas or by filling them with M-16 rounds. Those tactics will be ineffective against your house if it’s fortified by Hardened Structures, a Virginia-based construction company that offers ballistic hardened exteriors, installed on the outer walls and windows of your house. The custom exteriors are built not only to withstand bullets, but also forced entry, biological and chemical agents, and shock from underneath due to bombs going off nearby. Higher-level protection can resist damage from tornadoes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Hardened Structures will also build a complete fallout shelter for under $40,000. Necessary options such as air filtration and sewage systems cost a little extra, but should be included for anyone serious about surviving indefinitely. Despite being around since 1991, the company is still relatively unknown and maintains a low-profile. It guarantees confidentiality with all projects.
KI4U Bomb Shelter
Building an underground shelter is not cheap no matter how you decide to tackle the project, but KI4U sells its Mini-Blast Shelter as the perfect solution for preppers with extremely limited funds. They even deliver it right to your door and “ready to bury” for under $3,000; however, you can probably save a few more bucks by renting construction equipment and digging the hole yourself–that is, if you have the necessary manpower. But you get what you pay for when it comes to this option, as these shelters is basically just part of a culvert, the giant pipes that carry water from one side of a road to the other. It will be crammed and uncomfortable, but is certainly better than nothing in the event of nuclear war.
Converted Missile Silos
When the Cold War came to a close with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the United States government cleared out thousands of underground silos that formerly housed missiles. Today those decommissioned properties are for sale to the general public.
These sites, located all over the country, were built to withstand the biggest bombs Russia could possibly unleash. Most of these deals get you a bunker and several acres of land that you can build a above-ground home on.
One listing in Osage City, Kan. offers 25 acres of land, a sewage system, and 15,000 square feet of hardened underground space for $260,000. MissileBases.com has several listings to peruse. SurvivalCondo.com and SiloForSale.com are two more helpful resources.
