Since humans are instinctively protective, it makes sense that people want to defend themselves, their homes, and their loved ones. Part of personal and home defense is deciding whether or not you want to own a firearm for this purpose. There are many advantages and disadvantages to purchasing a firearm as well as having it around in case of an emergency. Each person has to first take into consideration why they want a firearm and what it will be used for.
Then, once you have decided to purchase one for home defense, there are several factors to take into account when you are ready to buy one. When purchasing a firearm, you have to keep in mind the different types of guns. Handguns are those that are designed to fit in the palm of your hand while long guns are not. Handguns include pistols and revolvers while long guns include everything from shotguns, rifles, and machine guns.
1. Pistol, Rifles and Revolvers
For home defense, most people prefer to go with pistols because they are accurate and easier to shoot. However, pistols are more complicated to operate, especially under stress and come with complicated safety mechanisms. They are also not as reliable as revolvers and may not have the stopping power you need. On the other hand, long guns can be extremely effective, and the shotgun is a popular home defense weapon. Long guns, though, are not as portable and may even be a hindrance in an emergency situation because they require both hands/arms to operate.
2. Caliber and Ammunition
Others factor to take into consideration is that of caliber and ammunition. The most common calibers of ammunition that people use include .45, .357, and .9mm. These numbers refer to the bore size or the diameter of the gun barrel. Generally speaking, the larger the caliber, the more stopping power the bullets have. For self or home defense, it makes sense to go with a higher caliber because you want to stop someone as quickly as possible so they do not hurt you or a loved one. A higher caliber, however, means that the gun will probably have higher recoil, making it harder to shoot accurately.
3. Size and Comfort
Another consideration to keep in mind is size and where you will store your firearm. It is imperative to practice shooting different guns so that you can get a feel for them. You should be comfortable operating the firearm.
4. Storing your firearm
Be sure to keep in mind where you will keep your firearm in case you need it. Some people prefer to carry a handgun around on their person and secure it to themselves with a holster. Others keep their firearms in a locked safe at home. If you do keep your firearm locked in a safe, will you be able to access it in case of an emergency?
5. Shop around
The key is to get the advice of an expert and be sure to shop around. Take time to practice actually operating the firearm. Remember that what works for one person when it comes to the best firearm for defense will not necessarily work for you.
