Basic Knots. Some things in life never get old, even after many centuries there are basic knots everyone should know today. Knotsmanship is not only for sailors and boy scouts, it is a valuable skill that is essential for mountain climbers, securing items in the back of a truck or on top of a vehicle. And knots can be used around the house in many other ways. Surprisingly, many people today do not know how to tie basic knots. So what type of knots should people learn tie?
Bowline Knot – This is a loop knot that is very common and is used everywhere around the world. The first step to create this knot is simple; make an overhand loop, then pass the end under and around the loop. Next bring up the end and put it through the eye and then pull it tight.
Clove Hitch Knot – This type of knot is used for attaching a line to a pole. Take a rope and wrap it around a stake, pole or tree, then wrap the rope around it a second time, but make sure to tuck the end under the second turn of the rope. The second turn should be between the pole and rope, and then pull both ends to tight.
Figure Eight Knot – This type of knot is used primarily as a means to stop the end of a rope from fraying. Like a figure eight, make a loop, then bring the end around and pass it under and up through the loop to make a figure eight. Pull it tight to secure the end of the rope. This is a stopper knot.
Reef Knot – If you know how to tie your shoes, then you can make a reef knot. It is used to tie two ends together or two ropes of the same size together. Take the two ends and pass them over and around each other. And then do it again and tighten. The knot should be symmetrical for it to tighten and lock properly. The reef knot is good to use on light loads and should not be used as a permanent knot.
Sheet Bend Knot – Similar to the reef knot, the sheet bend is used to tie two ropes together of different or unequal thickness. The larger of the two ropes should be made to form the bight. The smaller or thinner rope should be passed through and around the bight. Once around the back of the bight, pull the smaller rope under itself and then tighten both ends.
These 5 basic knots everyone should know are easy to make and very helpful. Whether it’s tying your shoes, erecting a tent, mountain climbing or securing a couch to the back of a pickup truck, knowing how to tie an effective knot is an important basic skill and
survival skill that is sure to come in handy one day.
